Written by Linda Emanuel, AgriSafe's newest employee.

I am a FarmHer, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a Registered Nurse and an advocate of wellness. One month ago I charted a new course in my long-established nursing profession. While combining my experiences and passions as an agriculturist, I began working as a community health nurse for a national non profit, AgriSafe.  AgriSafe is founded on the idea that all agricultural producers deserve access to health information and health care from providers who understand farming and ranching.

My purpose as an AgriSafe nurse is to encourage farm women to invest in themselves.  Investment in oneself or herself is not easy, I know. For example, it’s common to feel guilty for taking time to exercise as well as feeling guilty for not exercising.  We feel pressure to multitask daily! Our minds can get caught in a push/pull force that leads us to poor investment in ourselves.

My hope for FarmHers in 2018 is that you will look to AgriSafe to be your support to a healthier and happier you. Here is how we can help:

1) AgHRA.

AgriSafe has developed a health risk appraisal just for farm women that assesses your farm exposures  and  guides you through simple steps to prevent illness and injury. Check it out under the Women’s Health tab on the AgriSafe Website.

2) Know the Facts.

As agriculture producers, we have complicated jobs with a diversity of exposures. How often do we educate ourselves on occupational health risks? AgriSafe’s simple fact sheet highlights key points to help you focus on yourself and solutions to stay well. It’s free to access and to share.

3) Take 5.

All it takes is five minutes to share with your health care provider your job tasks. Let our simple guide remind you to be your own health advocate! Discuss and explore these talking points as listed in Take Charge of your Health in the Women in Ag Resource.

4) Be Mindful.

To be mindful is to be present, to be aware of experiences around us and involving us. The health of our family, our livestock, our crops, our business is on our minds.  How do you shift to be mindful of yourself? Adequate sleep, detoxing from electronic devices, exercise and eating well empowers us to be the best versions of ourselves.

5) Share your Story.

Through storytelling we make human connections that can enrich our lives and remind us we are not alone in our experiences. Take some time in 2018 to share your story with AgriSafe. Our purpose is to collect and share stories of life changing medical events experienced by farm women. We believe their stories can inspire and bring hope to others. Submitting a story is easy, do so here.

With boots on the ground, I take pride just like you in working to produce food, fiber and fuel for my family, community and world.  AgriSafe is your go-to source for navigating a journey of good health.

Funding for AgriSafe’s Women in Ag Initiatives is provided by the Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health, NIOSH AFF Grant U54 OH010162.

Thank You! Look forward to learning from Agrisafe. I am the primary person here and am now trying to balance cancer, arthritis, caring for myself and caring for the animals.

Good article, easy to understand, I liked the comment of boots on the ground, & yet promoting safety.
