• What Does Your Cliff Look Like?

August 27, 2015

Last night I finished up the polishing touches on my presentation for later this week at the North Dakota Farmers Union WILD Conference.  Despite the extremely cold temperatures that can be found that far north, I am super excited to be in the presence of a group of women in agriculture.  Conferences focused on women (and especially women in ag) are always fun, insightful and completely grounding for me. My talk is going to be about “Jumping off Your Cliff” and it starts with one of the biggest cliffs that I have ever and hopefully will ever jump off of.  That cliff was walking away from the career I had built for over a decade to have more time with my kids and to figure out what my next professional dream was.  Turns out that dream was FarmHer.

After I snapped the lid to my laptop shut I laid out my workout clothes before my head hit the pillow for what I hoped was a good nights sleep.  The clothes were the start to my plan of getting up about two hours earlier than normal to head to a Core Fit class.  Something new for me as my body, mind and my heart could use a jump start at the beginning of this new year.

I fell asleep quickly and then woke up with a racing mind just a few hours later.  In my FarmHer world there are a lot of new, exciting and at times, completely overwhelming things going on.  I promise to tell you more about that in the next blog post.  The biggest of these exciting new things has been building over the past few months and started with me having to push myself off another cliff.  I said yes to the unknown.  I said yes to something that will change FarmHer.  I said yes to uncertainty, excitement, and what looks to be a wild ride in the coming months.

I tossed and turned the rest of the night, falling asleep about 10 minutes before I had to get up to go to that workout class, or so it seemed.  I didn’t want to get out of my warm bed but I did. Yet another little cliff.

Now I sit, back home by 6:30, in super sweaty workout clothes but with a clear mind, ready and excited for the challenges ahead of me today.  I am congratulating myself about all of those little and big cliffs that got me right here to this point.  Now, for a shower, some Chris Stapleton playing loud through my speakers and a hot cup of coffee before the kids are up!

Take a minute to think about all of the cliffs you’ve jumped off of or maybe have been pushed off of recently and be sure to give yourself a high five because you made it through!  Did you land on your feet?  Give another high five!  And remember, even if the landing isn’t graceful, if your feet are eventually planted on the ground, you WIN!
