Rural roads might feel quiet and familiar—but they’re not always safe. In fact, 41% of deadly crashes in the U.S. happen on rural roads, even though they carry only a third of the nation’s traffic.
That’s why Nationwide created D.R.I.V.E. the 5, a program built to shine a light on safe driving in rural communities. During our ProtectHER Special, we sat down with Shawnda Vega of Nationwide and Missouri cattle farmer and crash survivor RanchHER Carey Portell to talk about why this campaign matters so much.
For Carey, it’s personal. Fourteen years ago, she and two of her children were hit by a drunk driver, leaving her with life-changing injuries and a long recovery. Today, she shares her story to remind others of the power—and the risk—of every decision behind the wheel.
D.R.I.V.E. the 5 is built around five key principles that make our roads safer:
- Distraction Free
- Rested and Alert
- Impairment Free
- Vehicle Maintained
- Environment Aware
They may sound simple, but they save lives. And as Shawnda reminded us, this isn’t just for new drivers—experienced drivers need the reminders, too. Every trip down a gravel road, every run into town, every time you head out late at night—it matters.
As women in agriculture, we’re often the ProtectHERs, setting the tone for our families and communities. That includes how we drive. Staying alert, modeling good habits, and talking about road safety with our kids and neighbors is one way we protect what matters most.

ProtectHER: FarmHER + RanchHER’s Impact Partnership with Nationwide
Since 1926, Nationwide®—founded by farmers, for farmers—has been committed to protecting what matters most. Today, that legacy continues through ProtectHer, a partnership with FarmHER + RanchHER that celebrates the women who lead with care, courage, and intention.
Across generations, women have often played a vital role in protecting their families, farms, and futures. On the road, in the fields, and at home, they are frequently the driving force behind safety and sustainability. ProtectHer honors these women – those who make safety second nature and legacy a priority.
Together we’re creating a ripple effect of protection across farms, ranches, and ag operations—because when women lead, everyone is safer. Find a Nationwide Agent.
