Young RanchHER awarded Durango’s Day of the Cowgirl Scholarship

University of Tennessee student Laurel Cox is living proof of what happens when passion meets opportunity in the Western world. Durango Boots, in partnership with the Dude Ranch Foundation, has announced Laurel as the recipient of their second annual National Day of the Cowgirl Scholarship — a $30,000 award to support her education and dreams.

Young RanchHER Laurel Cox of Bell Buckle, Tenn.

Laurel, from the small town of Bell Buckle, Tenn., is currently studying animal science and journalism at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her goal? To become a voice for agriculture and the Western way of life through storytelling, journalism, and broadcasting.

“There are so many passionate people with powerful stories that need to be shared,” Laurel says. “I want to be the connection between people in the Western industry and the rest of the world. My goal is to tell the full stories of people’s lives and encourage cowgirls everywhere to chase their dreams.”

The National Day of the Cowgirl holiday — celebrated every September 15 — honors the strength, spirit, and contributions of women in the Western world. The scholarship was created to carry that same spirit forward, supporting young women pursuing careers in western agriculture, ranching, equine, and western sports industries.

Durango Boots Marketing Manager Erin DeLong says Laurel embodies exactly what the scholarship is all about:

“The Western industry is rooted in traditions like faith, hard work, and community. Laurel lives these values, and we are thrilled to support her journey as a cowgirl.”

For Laurel, the award is more than financial support — it’s a reminder that her dreams matter.

“It means so much to me as a cowgirl who is finding my place in this industry to know that others believe in me,” she says. “I’m honored to add my name to a hopefully long list of cowgirls who will continue to change the world.”

Applications for the 2026 scholarship open September 15 and run through December 31, 2025. Eligible first-year undergraduate students with a passion for the Western industry are encouraged to apply.
