Sister RanchHERs Raise Horses like True Western Women

At Flitner Ranch in Shell, Wyoming, Morgan and Scotty Flitner round-up broodmares and their young colts for training. Morgan and Scotty are deeply involved in the ranch, with a strong love for horses. When we met them on their family’s Wyoming Ranch, not only did we see a pinnacle of the American family ranching tradition, but we also had a ton of fun! They prove there’s something about ranching with sisters that’s extra special.

Sister, Sister

Morgan and her sister, Scotty Flitner, share a dual mission to train the colts into well-rounded ranch horses. They navigate high-pressure situations to give the horses experience. With some horses only seeing around 30 days under the saddle, pushing them to tackle tough tasks helps maximize everyday riding into something valuable. On the other hand, broodmares are smart, defensive, and unpredictable, requiring careful handling.

The sisters also share an equal dedication to the ranch’s success and have found an unbreakable bond in each other as they follow in the footsteps of their mother and cattlewoman, Pam Flinter.

Flitner Ranch

Pam and Greg Flitner, the elder generation are the current leaders in the Flitner’s long, illustrious line of ranchers, which dates back to 1906. Flitner’s quarter horse program is the cornerstone of that legacy, producing some of the best ranch horses in the country. The family also holds a production horse sale every four years, offering over 100 heads of single-iron, family-raised horses to the public. Each horse has a unique identifying number, allowing the Flitners to track and share information about them.

Morgan and Scotty’s shared passion for the family ranch and the horse they love shines through them and everything they do. Ranching is woven into the fabric of who they are. They define something that Western women understood was within themselves long ago, and much before the rest of women understood. The specific power and prowess that female ranchers bring to the craft each day on the ranch often escapes definition.
